My partner and I did a two week road trip from Melbourne to the Blue Mountains in New South Wales last year in November 2023. We had been saying for 15 years that we wanted to see the Blue Mountains, but it was never the right time, things would come up that stopped us from going like not enough money, bushfires and floods in New South Wales.
We made an unplanned stop in Narooma for a couple of hours and ended up capturing numerous photos and videos of the wild seals. It was serendipitous that we stumbled upon these seal-viewing spots.
I haven’t visited the locations without photos yet, but I’ll update my post with pictures and details as soon as I do. Click on this link to go to
North Narooma Bridge
The Narooma bridge stands as the inaugural major bridge built along the Princes Highway by the Main Roads Board to enhance the highway’s infrastructure. Constructed from 1929 to 1931, it spans across the Wagonga Inlet.
North Narooma
Carters Headland, located just 5 kilometers north of Narooma at Bar Beach’s northern edge, is celebrated for whale and dolphin watching. This spot provides 180-degree views that can extend to Pigeon House Mountain, attracting visitors with its surf and the sight of whale calves.
Kianga, nearby, offers residences with sweeping views of the Tasman Sea and Dalmeny, featuring three beaches: Kianga Beach, Kianga Reef Beach, and Carters Beach, which are beautiful but can be hazardous. The area includes a store that doubles as a restaurant and general store.
Established as Kianga Pty Ltd in 1960, the village retains quaint holiday homes and has Kianga Lake within Batemans Marine Park, designated as a Sanctuary Zone where fishing is banned. Reef Beach is favored by local surfers.
Kianga is valued for its peaceful atmosphere, proximity to Narooma, and family-friendly swimming at Bar Beach. It provides easy access to a boat ramp and a scenic cycleway connecting to Dalmeny and Narooma.

Cycle the Coastal Route Pedal along the picturesque cycleway from Dalmeny to Narooma via Kianga, offering an easy ride with stunning coastal views. Follow the path along Wagonga Inlet, extending your journey to Narooma’s wharf or exploring the marina and boatsheds.
Go Fishing Dive into Eurobodalla’s diverse fishing spots, suitable for all ages and skill levels, whether on land or sea.
Take a Leisurely Walk Explore Kianga’s tranquility with a stroll along Yabbarra Beach or head to Carters Headland for whale watching. Further south, discover Bar Beach and the Mill Bay Walkway.

Yabbara Beach, Dalmeny
Dalmeny, located just north of Narooma, is a charming coastal village nestled between Mummuga Lake and Kianga Creek. With stunning vistas of Montague Island and the Tasman Sea, Dalmeny beckons visitors with its array of beaches, parks, and walking trails.
A scenic cycle path connects Dalmeny to Kianga and Narooma, tracing the coastline and providing breathtaking views along the way. Nearby, a popular camping ground and a range of holiday rental accommodations are conveniently located close to the local shopping center.

Cycle Narooma to Dalmeny
Narooma boasts a plethora of charming cafes and restaurants, offering delightful dining experiences. Embark on the scenic Mill Bay Boardwalk, where stingrays, seals, and fish abound in the waters below. Don’t miss the chance for whale watching along the coast, adding an extra layer of allure to the already breathtaking ocean vistas.
Commencing from Riverside Drive or Forsters Bay, where delectable seafood eateries await, the ride leads to Australia Rock on the southern breakwater in Narooma. Passing through Kianga en route to Dalmeny, cyclists are treated to another set of stunning vistas from the headlands. Conclude the ride at the Dalmeny Sports Club, a wonderful starting point as well.

Mystery Bay
Mystery Bay, situated 15 kilometers south of Narooma, is a tranquil coastal village renowned for its geological intrigue and breathtaking scenery. Visitors relish in discovering rock pools, caves, and vast sandy beaches while the crystal-clear waters invite swimming, diving, and fishing. Nestled within the coastal forest, the primitive campground offers a serene retreat, complemented by walking trails, lookout points, and rich historical insights, making Mystery Bay a captivating destination.

Narooma Bar Beach South
Bar Beach South in Narooma is a safe spot for children to learn snorkeling and swimming, thanks to its natural enclosure and the break-wall at its northern tip. Adjacent to the beach, Apex Park offers various amenities including picnic areas, toilets, and barbecue facilities. Seals are often spotted near the boat ramp, and a scenic boardwalk leads to Narooma around Wagonga Inlet from the western end of the picnic area.

Snorkelling Bar Beach South
To reach Bar Beach South in Narooma, take the Princes Highway north and cross Narooma Bridge. Turn right into Dalmeny Drive, then right onto Centenary Drive, leading to the Apex Park carpark.
Bar Beach South is a safe spot for children to learn snorkeling, thanks to its natural enclosure and the break wall at its northern tip. The marine habitat teems with juvenile fish, squid, and occasional sightings of small seahorses, making it an exciting introduction to marine life. The beach is enclosed by netting and its sheltered position makes it popular for both novice snorkelers and divers.
Adjacent to Bar Beach South, Apex Park offers amenities including a playground, covered picnic tables, barbecues, and ample parking.

Narooma Lighthouse Museum
Discover the rich history of the Montague Island Lighthouse at the Narooma Lighthouse Museum, conveniently located at the Narooma Tourism Booking Office.
The museum’s main attraction is the original light and optical apparatus from the Montague Island Light Station. Crafted by Chance Brothers of Birmingham, suppliers of lighthouse equipment during the colonial era, these artifacts were installed on 6 October 1881 and served faithfully for nearly 105 years until their manual operation ceased on 14 September 1986, coinciding with the light’s automation.
The museum features a comprehensive interpretive display titled ‘Mainland to Island’ and a diverse collection of artifacts, providing visitors with an immersive journey into the legacy of this historic landmark.

Narooma Surf Beach
Just a few minutes from Narooma’s heart, this scenic beach offers views of Montague Island, and nearby, the stunning Glasshouse Rocks are within easy walking distance.
Narooma Surf Beach is favored by both locals and tourists. During the summer months, the beach is monitored by the Narooma Surf Life Saving Club, situated directly on the beach.

Ringlands Rotary Walk Narooma
Ringland’s Rotary Walk offers a scenic, self-guided trek that weaves through the bush from Shell Point to Flying Fox Bay, tracing the Wagonga Inlet’s shoreline in Narooma. Spanning four kilometres one way, this path is rated as a medium difficulty walk. The Narooma Rotary Club initiated this walking path in the 1995/96 period.

This picturesque picnic spot is situated at Handkerchief Beach’s southern tip. Pack a picnic to savor following a revitalizing swim or a leisurely stroll along the shore.
For access, head south on the Princes Highway past Narooma and make a left at the first turn after passing Island View Beach Resort. Continue along the dirt road to find the picnic area, which is equipped with toilet facilities.

Kayaking Corunna Lake
Experience a delightful kayak journey on a scenic lake, launching easily from a sandy area near the boat ramp at the lake’s northern tip. Dedicate a few hours to meander through quaint bays, paddle under the highway bridge, and venture down to where the lake meets the ocean. Alternatively, for a leisurely lunch, paddle across to Tilba Valley Winery at the lake’s southern end, enjoying a meal and live music (call ahead to confirm) on a round trip of up to 12 kilometers.
The winery is accessible via a shallow landing followed by a 600-meter walk up a dirt road from the water’s edge. The view of the winery from the lake is unmistakable. A barbecue/picnic area and restrooms are available at Corunna Lake. It’s located off the Princes Highway, 7 kilometers south of Narooma.

Kayaking Wagonga Inlet at Narooma
The sparkling, azure waters of Wagonga Inlet offer a delightful kayaking experience with picturesque views of the town and ancient forests lining the shores. Venture to the inlet’s upper reaches to explore a historic cemetery and view the sprawling oyster farms, with an option to land near the pontoon. Launch your journey from the Old Punt boat ramp beside the highway on Narooma Bridge’s south side, or start near the cafes, restaurants, and foreshore park along Riverside Drive, where kayak rentals are available.
Facilities include a barbecue/picnic area and a playground, enriching your outdoor adventure. The vast expanse of the inlet invites endless exploration by water. However, those in open kayaks and canoes are advised to keep near the shore, especially on windy days when the waters may become rough. For calmer waters, head towards Forsters Bay.
