Lakes Entrance

Located at the meeting point of the Gippsland Lakes and the Southern Ocean, Lakes Entrance is a beloved holiday destination offering a perfect blend of coastal and lakeside experiences. With its roots in Gunaikurnai land, the town boasts a plethora of accommodations and amenities for visitors. From the iconic Ninety Mile Beach, where lifeguards patrol during summers, to serene kayak adventures on the lakes, there’s something for everyone. Fishing enthusiasts flock year-round, while camping options abound along the tranquil lakeshores. Indulge in the freshest seafood delights and immerse yourself in local experiences through cruises and eco-tours, revealing hidden gems of the region.

Start your day with a stroll along the esplanade, where the golden sands meet the gentle waters, creating a mesmerizing vista. Capture the scenic beauty or indulge in water activities like kayaking, fishing, or simply basking in the sun.

Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park

The Gippsland Lakes, Australia’s largest inland waterways, span over 600 square kilometers, encompassing lakes, marshes, and lagoons. These majestic lakes are bordered by Ninety Mile Beach, stretching from Seaspray to Lakes Entrance. Abundant bird and marine life, including lake dolphins and pelicans, thrive within this picturesque ecosystem.

For nature enthusiasts, the Lakes National Park is a haven. Hike through lush trails, witness diverse birdlife, and admire the scenic vistas from Lookout Point. The mesmerizing views of the lakes meeting the sea are unparalleled.

Food and History

Explore the town’s rich maritime history at the Griffiths Sea Shell Museum or indulge in the freshest seafood at local eateries. Don’t miss the iconic Entrance Walk, offering panoramic views of the lakes and the Ninety Mile Beach.

North Arm

The following three photos were captured on the street Marine Parade, a vibrant area featuring a playground, restroom facilities, and a boat ramp, often frequented by pelicans.

Lions Park

This structure is the Cunninghame Arm Foot Bridge, linking the inlet with the surf beach. Upon crossing the bridge, take an immediate right to access a walking trail that follows the Inlet to the conclusion of the Boardwalk Track and the New-Works Historic Cottages.

The images below capture Main Surf Beach, accessible via the Cunninghame Arm Foot Bridge.

Lake Tyers State Park

This park envelops Lake Tyers, stretching from Ninety Mile Beach east of Lakes Entrance to Mount Nowa Nowa inland. Visitors can enjoy boating, fishing, camping, bushwalking, and forest drives within its expansive boundaries.

Sunsets Over The Lakes

As the day ends, treat yourself to a stunning sunset over the lakes, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink, a sight that will linger in your memory.

These are the best locations to take sunset photos at Lakes Entrance, we first headed to “Marine Parade Lakes Entrance” at the first roundabout as you drive down the hill and start to come into Lakes Entrance turn left at the roundabout which is “Marine Parade”. The second spot is at the same first roundabout about turn right onto “Bullock Island Road” or if you are on Marine Parade just go straight at the roundabout and the road will go over a small bridge and then follow the road past the “Gippsland Ports” to the end where there will be a massive car park, this is where most people were watching the sunset so it is really popular, I have been to Lakes Entrance a few times now but had never been to Bullock Island so it was first time watching the sunset over the water and its the perfect location. After we had taken enough photos and videos at his location we wanted to drive up to Kalimna Lakes Entrance lookout which is at the top of the hill on the corner of “Hotel Road” and “Princes Highway” there is a motel on the corner, there were a couple of people watching the sunset but I think the second location was the best one to take sunset photos at after visiting all three.

Pelican are the most popular bird you will see when visiting Lakes Entrance, the other photos are taken on “Marine Parade” or along the “Esplanade” where you cross the bridge to go to “Main Surf Beach” there is a path along the inlet once you have crossed the bridge.

Places To See Around Lakes Entrance

During my stay in Metung in April 2021, my partner and I took a drive past Lakes Entrance, making stops in Orbost, Marlo, Cape Conran, and Bemm River. While the drive is 1 hour and 20 minutes, I suggest allocating more time for sightseeing at each location and for the return trip to your accommodation.

Bemm River

Nestled along Victoria’s coast, Bemm River offers a serene escape for nature lovers and anglers. Surrounded by Croajingolong National Park, it’s a haven for fishing, kayaking, and birdwatching. With its proximity to Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park, it’s perfect for beach lovers and hikers. Despite its small size, Bemm River’s simplicity and warm hospitality charm visitors. Enjoy fresh catches at local eateries and cozy accommodations. Experience the tranquil beauty of Victoria’s coast at Bemm River, where unspoiled landscapes and calm waters await.

Cape Conran Coastal Park

Cape Conran Coastal Park epitomizes nature’s beauty, beckoning adventurers and tranquility seekers alike. With pristine beaches and scenic trails, it offers a myriad of activities from surfing to bushwalking. The park’s diverse ecosystems host native flora and fauna, creating a haven for nature enthusiasts. Whether fishing, boating, or simply relaxing, visitors immerse themselves in nature’s embrace. Beyond its natural splendor, Cape Conran Coastal Park offers a serene escape where ocean waves blend with coastal winds. From rugged coastlines to panoramic viewpoints, it’s an unforgettable journey into Victoria’s untamed beauty.

Marlo

Marlo, a coastal gem, harmonizes river and ocean beauty. Anglers and kayakers relish its serene estuary, while birdwatchers delight in its vibrant avian life. Pristine beaches and rolling dunes offer scenic spots for relaxation. Charming eateries and a laid-back vibe define Marlo’s allure. Nearby national parks beckon adventurers with hiking trails and secluded beaches.

I suggest taking a day trip from Metung to Marlo, a quaint destination with limited dining options and no shops. It’s advisable to bring along a picnic lunch or purchase food in Lakes Entrance beforehand.

Orbost

Forest Park in Orbost offers a peaceful nature retreat. With sprawling greenery and well-maintained trails, it’s perfect for picnics and leisurely walks. Families enjoy designated play areas and barbecue spots for outdoor bonding. This sanctuary invites all to reconnect with nature’s tranquility amidst Orbost’s lush beauty.

During my visit in April 2021, which was in Autumn, I was struck by the stunning array of colors in the trees, ranging from vibrant reds and yellows to rich oranges.

Lakes Entrance Lookout

The lookout, situated just five minutes from Lakes Entrance town on Princes Highway, offers stunning ocean vistas. Adjacent to Ocean Views Motel, ample parking is available. On sunny days, the water dazzles in shades of brilliant blue and green.

Panoramic Perfection

Perched atop a vantage point, this lookout gifts visitors with panoramic views that captivate the soul. The sprawling landscapes painted with hues of blue and green—the glistening waters of the lakes intertwining with the coastal beauty—create a mesmerizing tapestry that’s nothing short of picturesque.

Nature’s Grandeur Unveiled

The lookout isn’t just a spot for stunning views; it’s a stage where nature performs its finest acts. From dawn’s first light casting a golden hue over the waters to dusk’s serene embrace, each moment here feels like a painting come to life. The tranquil ambiance invites contemplation, offering a moment to reconnect with oneself amid nature’s grandeur.

A Photographer’s Paradise

For photography enthusiasts, Lakes Entrance Lookout is a dream. The changing hues of the sky and water, the dance of sunlight on the waves, and the distant horizon merging into the infinite—every angle begs to be captured, preserving the magic of this serene escape.

Embracing Tranquility

The lookout isn’t just about the visuals; it’s an experience that soothes the soul. Visitors often find solace in the gentle breeze, the distant calls of seabirds, and the uninterrupted views that stretch to the horizon. It’s a place to pause, breathe, and immerse oneself in the tranquility that nature generously bestows.

Visit and Experience

Whether you’re a nature enthusiast, a seeker of stunning vistas, or someone in search of serene moments, Lakes Entrance Lookout in Kalimna beckons. Pack a picnic, bring a camera, or simply come to soak in the beauty that defines this exquisite spot.

Final Thoughts

Lakes Entrance Lookout in Kalimna isn’t just a viewpoint; it’s a sanctuary where time slows down, allowing you to appreciate the simple yet profound beauty of the world around us. It’s an invitation to pause, reflect, and bask in the serenity that only nature can provide.

Come, venture to Lakes Entrance Lookout, and discover the harmony where the sky meets the sea—a haven that encapsulates the essence of tranquility and natural splendor.
