I recommend planning your meals in advance and completing any major grocery shopping before heading to Wilsons Promontory, as there are no large supermarkets in the area. While general stores at Tidal River and Yanakie offer a decent selection of items, they may not have everything you need. If you’re staying in Sandy Point, there’s a small store there as well, but it’s still wise to come well-prepared.

Funny Anecdote

My partner has visited Wilsons Promontory more often than I have. During his twenties, he camped at Tidal River in a tent. One night, he went to bed earlier than his friends and was startled awake by something heavy on his legs. Thinking it was one of his friends who had come back late after drinking, he was amazed to discover it was actually a wombat! The wombat had ripped through the tent in search of a loaf of bread. He was astonished to find a wombat sprawled across his legs. So, if you’re camping, make sure to store your food in an esky or the car, as wombats have an extraordinary sense of smell!

Prepare for Your Visit: Remember to bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and insect repellent. There are no facilities at Whisky Bay, so be sure to take all your rubbish with you to keep this pristine location clean.
Respect the Environment: As with all natural areas, it’s important to respect the environment. Stay on designated paths, avoid disturbing wildlife, and leave no trace of your visit.

Warning

At Whisky Bay there can be large unexpected waves and strong currents, there are no life saving services and the weather can change quickly.
If you plan on fishing on the rocks be careful because there are submerged rocks and the rocks are very slippery when wet. Always wear a PFD jacket and never fish alone as conditions can change quickly.
Keep clear of cliffs and don’t walk, sunbath or play underneath cliffs as they can collapse at anytime without any notice.
