This iconic quartz white sand beach truly lives up to its name, squeaking beneath your feet as you walk, run, or jump on it. Both kids and adults will delight in creating “music” as they playfully skip across the sand. Squeaky Beach is a must-see on any Wilsons Prom itinerary.

You can access Squeaky Beach from a car park along the main road, but for an even better experience, hike from the Tidal River Campground (a 5 km round trip). The trail crosses the scenic tidal river and winds through coastal brush, offering breathtaking views of Squeaky Beach. Once you descend through the scattered boulders—perfect for exploring and climbing—you’ll reach the beach, where you can stomp, jump, or even make “sand angels” in the pristine white sand. I recommend planning your meals ahead of time and doing your major grocery shopping before heading to Wilsons Promontory, as there are no large supermarkets in the vicinity. Although general stores at Tidal River and Yanakie provide a reasonable range of items, they may not have everything you require. If you’re staying in Sandy Point, there’s also a small store there, but it’s best to come well-prepared.

Funny Tale

My partner has visited Wilsons Promontory more frequently than I have. During his twenties, he camped at Tidal River in a tent. One night, he turned in early, only to be abruptly awakened by a heavy weight on his legs. Assuming it was a late-returning friend who’d had a few drinks, he was shocked to discover it was actually a wombat! The creature had ripped through the tent in search of a loaf of bread and ended up sprawled across his legs. If you’re camping, remember to store your food in an esky or the car—wombats have an extraordinary sense of smell!

At Squeaky Beach, be aware that large, unexpected waves and strong currents can occur, and there are no lifeguard services available. The weather can also change rapidly.

If you plan to fish from the rocks, exercise caution. Submerged rocks and slippery surfaces when wet can pose risks. Always wear a personal flotation device (PFD) and avoid fishing alone, as conditions can shift quickly.

Stay clear of cliffs—don’t walk, sunbathe, or play beneath them, as they may collapse suddenly without warning.

On hot summer days, with temperatures ranging from 30 to 40 degrees Celsius, the sand can become extremely hot. Having walked on hot sand in flip-flops myself, I recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes to avoid discomfort.
