I suggest planning your meals ahead of time and doing any significant grocery shopping before you head to Wilsons Promontory, as large supermarkets are not available in the vicinity. General stores at Tidal River and Yanakie provide a good range of supplies, but they might not carry everything you need. If you’re staying in Sandy Point, there is a small store available, but it’s still best to arrive well-stocked.

Humorous Story

My partner has had more visits to Wilsons Promontory than I have. In his twenties, he camped at Tidal River in a tent. One night, he went to bed earlier than his friends and was jolted awake by a heavy weight on his legs. Assuming it was one of his friends returning late after a few drinks, he was astonished to find it was actually a wombat! The wombat had torn through the tent looking for a loaf of bread. He couldn’t believe a wombat was lounging on his legs. If you’re camping, make sure to store your food in an esky or the car, as wombats have an incredible sense of smell!

At Picnic Bay, be aware that sudden large waves and strong currents can occur, and there are no lifesaving services available. The weather can also change rapidly.
If you’re planning to fish from the rocks, exercise caution due to submerged rocks and the slippery nature of wet surfaces. Always wear a personal flotation device (PFD) and avoid fishing alone, as conditions can change unexpectedly.
Stay clear of cliffs and refrain from walking, sunbathing, or playing underneath them, as they can collapse without warning.

On a hot summer day, with temperatures reaching between 30 and 40 degrees Celsius, the sand can become extremely hot underfoot. I’ve walked on scorching sand in flip-flops before, and it wasn’t enjoyable. For a more comfortable experience, I recommend wearing sturdy walking shoes.

Do you have to pay to enter Wilsons Prom?

Day visitor entry to the park is free. As you drive through the park towards Tidal River, there are numerous places to explore. It’s advisable to leave the park before sunset, as wildlife is more active from dusk to dawn. Camping fees apply, and pre-booking is essential to secure your campsite.

Can you drink tap water at Wilsons Prom?

Toilets are available throughout the park. Those outside Tidal River are drop toilets. Hand dryers are not provided within the park. For the locations of toilets, visit the Parks Victoria website to download a Wilsons Promontory map.

Are there showers at Wilsons Prom?

It offers hot showers, laundry facilities, dishwashing stations, picnic tables, and free gas BBQs. Additionally, there’s a general store, the National Parks Visitor Centre, and a café. Rates start at $60 per night for the site.
