After leaving Port Macquarie on our 2 week roadtrip where we were sight seeing in New South Wales, Australia we stopped at Smoky Cape Lighhouse with amazing views, while we were walking up to the lighthouse a lady who was coming back said she saw whales. So we spent a hour or more whale watching as they were so close (2km from the shore) and were breaching and flapping their flippers, there was a big rock in the water that they were navigating around and a sandbar just off the cliff face and close to shore. They breached to let others know to go this way, we did see a whale go up and around the top of the rock and others went through the gap between the rock and sandbar. They are amazing creatures and it’s awesome seeing them breach and flap there flippers, but they only seem to do it when they need to communicate a message to other whales like boats too close, sandbars and rocks, it was windy the day we were there so it was hard to video but we got amazing clear videos of them breaching and flapping there flippers and you can see how big and beautiful they are in my videos. On the way out we saw two kangaroos on the side of the cottage just relaxing.

Visiting Tips
Access: The lighthouse is accessible via a steep walking track, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water.
The day we visited 8th October 2024 there were only a few people at the lighthouse, which was surprising because it was school holidays for New South Wales, Australia so I was expecting it to be really busy. We watched people come and go at the lookout as people didn’t stay long, we were the only ones at that time that were really interested and I could of spend the whole day watching and videoing these amazing animals as they were so close to the mainland and it’s the best spot we have found so far to see whales that close and active without having to do a whale watching tour as my partner gets really bad motion sickness especially on boats.
The pictures below show it is a steep and short walk up to the lighthouse lookout, you can stop as many times as you need to walking up and you have the rail to hold onto, its well worth the walk if you don’t like walking up hills when you see whales going past so close to the shore, its eaier walking back down,
The photos below are of the grounds at Smoky Cape Lighthouse, we visited on the 8th October 2024 it was nice and sunny around here but when we were at the lighthouse lookout it was very windy, don’t forget to bring your binoculars, camera, sun screen so you don’t get wind burnt and a warm jacket as it can get cold.
