The day we visited was the 8th October 2024, Coffs Harbour was our last stop for the day after we spent the day sight seeing along the coast before arriving at our accomodation for the night in Woolgoolga which is only 23 minutes up the coast past Coffs Harbour. We stopped at marina drive and walked along the harbour to Muttonbird Island where there’s a lookout on the mountain, the day we were there it was too windy, so I walked a little bit up the hill to take a video of the whole area. There are signs up on the concrete blocks saying “caution-no climbing on concrete harbour units”. We had perfect weather al day until we reached Coffs harbour where it looked like it was going to bucket down with rain, we were lucky that it didn’t rain and gave us some time to check out this walk and take photos and video to share with you all. Coffs Harbour is a popular holiday destination over summer and I would love to come back here to explore the area more. We had planned to see more of Coffs Harbour but because it was cold and windy we decided to go straight to our accomodation.

Stay on Track
Shearwaters nest in delicate burrows, providing shelter for their eggs and young chicks against unpredictable weather conditions
A Harsh Environment for Plants
Muttonbird Island presents a challenging environment for plant life. The diversity and coverage of vegetation can decline significantly during periods of unusually low rainfall and extended heatwaves.
Plants here must endure:
- Shallow, nutrient-poor soils
- Strong, salt-laden onshore winds
- Intense summer heat
- Prolonged dry spells
- Heavy rainfall events
Adding to these challenges, thousands of shearwaters dig burrows each year, disturbing the ground. However, the island’s vegetation and root systems play a crucial role in preventing burrow collapse, helping to support the seabirds’ nesting habitat.
