We left our accommodation at Saltwater Apartments in Lake Cathie and made our way to Tacking Point Lighthouse, Sea Acres National Park Rainforest and Burley Point in Port Macquarie. Then we stopped at Rocky Beach Lookout which was just down from Burley Point to see the beach and take pictures and videos. We didn’t stay long as we wanted to stop at other places along the way. It’s also a hang gliding and para gliding launch site.
Rocky Beach Lookout: A Hidden Coastal Treasure in Port Macquarie
Nestled along the stunning coastline of Port Macquarie, New South Wales, Rocky Beach Lookout offers visitors a chance to soak in breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean and the rugged beauty of the Australian coastline. This lesser-known gem provides a tranquil retreat for nature lovers, photographers, and anyone seeking a peaceful escape.
The View That Captivates
Perched atop a rocky headland, the lookout delivers panoramic vistas of the crashing waves, golden sands, and dramatic cliffs that define the area. Whether you visit at sunrise to watch the first rays of light dance across the ocean or at sunset when the sky is painted in hues of orange and pink, the view is always mesmerizing. It’s a fantastic spot for whale watching during their migration season from May to November, so don’t forget to bring your binoculars.
I loved staying here and it is opposite the beach and has a pool and spa.
The Legend of the Three Brothers
North Brother, Middle Brother & South Brother Mountains
Long ago, when the land was flat and unmarked, there lived three brothers: Dooragan, the eldest; Mooragan, the middle brother; and Booragan, the youngest. Their mother was the spirit of the waters, represented by the lakes and the sea.
When the time came for the brothers to undergo their initiation, they were sent to live with different clans within the Birpai nation. Dooragan, the eldest, was sent north to join the Stingray people. Mooragan, the middle brother, walked along the lakes towards the sea to meet the Crab people. Booragan, the youngest, journeyed south to live with the Shark people.
However, jealousy grew in Mooragan’s heart. He tried to convince Dooragan to help him harm Booragan, believing that with his younger brother gone, he would gain greater favor from their mother. Dooragan refused, but Mooragan’s envy consumed him. Ignoring his brother’s disapproval, Mooragan ran south and took Booragan’s life.
The Willy Wagtail bird witnessed this tragic act and flew to their mother, carrying the terrible news. Overcome with anger and grief, their mother condemned both Dooragan and Mooragan without questioning the details. Later, realizing her mistake and the innocence of Dooragan, she was filled with regret and sorrow.
To ensure justice, the Gumal, who was responsible for punishment among the Birpai people, intervened. The Gumal transformed the three brothers into the mountains we know today as North Brother, Middle Brother, and South Brother. Dooragan, the innocent brother, became North Brother Mountain, standing between two lakes—Watson Taylor and Queens Lake. This division symbolized the splitting of their mother’s spirit into two, a reflection of her grief and heartbreak.
Today, the Three Brothers stand south of Port Macquarie as a reminder of this legend and its lessons.
