After visiting Norah Head Lighthouse and Budgewoi Beach,, we followed a recommendation from our Lake Haven host and explored Munmorah State Conservation Area. With limited time, we focused on Frazer Beach and Snapper Point, though the park has much more to offer. Our journey continued with a brief stop at Catho Lookout to capture the stunning coastal views with photos and videos. Our last stop for the day was Nobby beach in Newcastle, the day we stopped it was really busy as it was the Labour Day long weekend (5th October 2024) plus school holidays. We parked a 1km away on the side of the road as it was too busy up ahead as people wanted to park as close as possible, it’s also paid parking for however long you want to spend there, we paid $8.00 for an hour and a half. It’s around $5.00 an hour.

Whibayganba, once an island of deep cultural significance, holds a rich and complex narrative woven into the fabric of the local landscape. Local lore tells of a giant kangaroo concealed within Whibayganba. When it thumped its tail, earthquakes would shake the surrounding land. The island, surrounded by rocks and turbulent waters, was said to be an ideal refuge to contain this powerful being, who remains hidden there to this day.

In 1818, European settlers altered the island by attaching it to the mainland, creating open access to a place once secluded. By 1855, the top of the island was flattened, further changing the landscape. These changes have not diminished Whibayganba’s cultural importance. The stories of the kangaroo remain a powerful reminder of its presence, resonating with the land and its people.

Today, Whibayganba stands as a testament to its ancestral heritage, inviting reflection on its enduring significance within the City of Newcastle. Its legacy lives on through stories, which continue to connect the past with the present, ensuring the cultural memory of this sacred place endures for generations to come.

Whibayganba – Nobbys Head

Whibayganba, also known as Nobbys Head, is one of Newcastle’s most iconic landmarks. The City of Newcastle acknowledges the traditional lands of the Awabakal and Worimi peoples, whose cultural stories and deep knowledge of Country are inseparable from these lands and waters. The Aboriginal name for Newcastle, Mulubinba, refers to a local sea fern once harvested from the harbour, symbolizing the enduring connection of the First Nations people to this place.

Country is not just a physical landscape but a living entity that connects all elements and beings through songlines and kinship systems. Recognizing Aboriginal place names, such as Whibayganba, is a vital step in addressing historical injustices that displaced Aboriginal people from their lands and restoring cultural identity to these significant sites.

In 2016, Whibayganba was officially recognized as a dual name alongside Nobbys Head by the NSW Geographical Names Board, reflecting both its Aboriginal and European histories. Historically referred to as Coal Isle and Nobbys Island in English, the Aboriginal name Whibayganba was first recorded in 1828 by surveyor Thomas Mitchell.

Check surf conditions before swimming, and always swim between the flags at Nobby’s Beach.

The first two photos are where we parked along Wharf Road Newcastle East and we just walked the 1km down to Nobbys Beach, we don’t mind parking furthur away and walking the day we were there it was windy as we arrived here at 3pm in the afternoon, the walk up to the beach is flat and paved and is wheel chair and pram accessible with a ramp onto the beach.
