On the 12th August 2024 we drove to Steavenson Falls in Marysville because it was was going to be a beautiful warm sunny day of 18 degrees with blue sky’s, which is rare in winter and with still one more month until the start of Spring on the 1st of September. We took the opportunity to get out and see the falls, we left home at 9:30am and arrived at Steavenson Falls at 11:21am, it was actually really warm in the sun but colder in the shade. Steavenson Falls is 1 hour and 57 minutes from Melbourne by car.
In February 2009 the visitor infrastructure and forest were destroyed by the Black Saturday bush fires that roared through the Steavenson Valley. They have built new toilet blocks and viewing platforms with awesome views of the 84 metre tall falls with an easy 700 metre flat walk from the carpark to the viewing platforms, the path is a wide gravel track that is suitable for prams, wheelchairs and walkers.
A lot of people who are retired visit the falls because of the easy access and its perfect walk for young kids. I recommend visiting during the week if you can, because weekends its a very popular place to visit. There are also flood lights along the path which operate from dusk to 11pm at night. If we had of know that we would have stayed the night to see the falls lit up and the chance to see a platypus which one of the signs mentioned. Its just another reason why we want to go back and visit again plus there are lots of walks we want to check out and Lake Mountain which is only 30 minutes up the road. If you visit over summer (December to February) just be careful because Marysville is in a high risk area for bushfires. I recommend downloading the Vic Emergency app that will tell you what the fire rating for that day is and if there are trees down or accidents.
After we saw the falls we walked up to “The Top of Falls Lookout” which was only 800 metres long, winding up the hill, it was pretty rocky and uneven track so be careful to not sprain your ankle, and look where you are stepping and not looking at your phone. We didn’t see anyone on the track going up, but on the way down we saw a couple of people heading up.
After the falls we drove up to Keppel Lookout, you can walk up to the lookout from the Top Of Falls Lookout there is steps at the start of the track and a sign and map or you can drive up like we did. It’s a dirt road all the way to the lookout, so your car will get dirty and there are lots of pot holes to try and avoid. We were the only ones at the lookout with amazing views of the mountains and valley.
After Keppel lookout we stopped at Maroondah Dam on the way back and walked along the dam wall, then headed back home so we didn’t get stuck in the peak hour traffic.
A Day at Steavenson Falls, Marysville: Victoria’s Majestic Cascade
If you’re looking for an easy yet rewarding nature escape from Melbourne, Steavenson Falls in Marysville is the perfect destination. Just a two-hour drive from the city, this iconic waterfall offers stunning views, peaceful walking tracks, and an escape into the heart of Victoria’s pristine wilderness.
The Beauty of Steavenson Falls
At an impressive 84 meters high, Steavenson Falls is one of Victoria’s tallest and most accessible waterfalls. It cascades over five tiers, with the final drop into a serene pool surrounded by lush forest. The waterfall is fed by the Steavenson River, and its roar fills the air as you approach, creating a truly tranquil atmosphere. It’s hard not to be mesmerized by the sight and sound of the falls as they tumble down the mountainside.

The Walk to the Falls
The main walking trail to Steavenson Falls is just 700 meters from the car park, making it suitable for all ages and fitness levels. The well-maintained path winds gently along the riverbank, offering glimpses of the surrounding greenery as you draw closer to the waterfall. The walk itself is peaceful, with the sound of rushing water guiding you towards the main viewing platform.
For those looking for a bit more adventure, there are longer trails that branch out from the falls, allowing visitors to explore the surrounding forest and enjoy elevated views of the falls and the valley. These tracks vary in difficulty, so there’s something for everyone, whether you’re after a leisurely stroll or a more strenuous hike.

This is the first viewing platform where it shows how tall the falls are.

These photos are from the main viewing platform.

If you cross over the bridge there is another smaller viewing platform that gives a different angle to the view.
Except for the first photo below the next 5 photos are taken from the top falls lookout, and the last photo is of the view that we got to see walking up the track

Top of Falls lookout
There is a path that goes up to the top of the falls which has a different view looking down from the top of the waterfall, the walk is only 800 metres one way which takes about 15-30 minutes depending on fast you can walk up hill.

You cross over the bridge in the photo below to get to the viewing platform.

Steavenson Falls by Night
One of the unique features of Steavenson Falls is its night-time illumination. After dark, the falls are lit up by floodlights powered by a hydroelectric turbine, giving the waterfall a magical glow. Visiting in the evening offers a completely different experience, as the soft lights reflect off the cascading water, creating a peaceful and enchanting scene. It’s the perfect way to end a day in nature, and it’s well worth sticking around for.
I would love to go back at night time to see the waterfall lite up.

Picnic Areas and Facilities
Steavenson Falls is an ideal spot for a picnic, with several tables and grassy areas nearby. You can pack a lunch and enjoy the serene surroundings, or simply relax after your walk. There are also toilets and parking facilities, making it a convenient and family-friendly spot to spend a few hours.
The Rebirth of Marysville
Marysville, a charming town that was heavily impacted by the 2009 Black Saturday bushfires, has made a remarkable recovery, and Steavenson Falls stands as a symbol of this resilience. The surrounding forest is lush and green, offering a striking contrast to the town’s past. Today, Marysville is a peaceful retreat, filled with cafes, galleries, and friendly locals. A visit to Steavenson Falls isn’t complete without spending some time exploring the town and supporting the local community.
