On the fifth day of our road trip to Queensland, Australia we stayed in Moss Vale to explore the area’s stunning waterfalls in the outdoors. Our last stop for the day was Cascade Falls after exploring Carrington Falls and Lower Minnawurra Falls and Jamberoo Lookout in the mountains on the 2nd October 2024.
When driving from Carrington Falls Google will try and direct you down a small turn called “Calderwood trail” where the slow vehicle turn out is, its gate is closed because it’s someone private property and there is no where to park. Type in “Cascade picnic area” instead of “Cascade Falls” into google maps. Keep driving until you get to this flat area in the pictures below.
It’s a 1km walk along the river in the rainforest, the walk starts on the right hand side past the sign and around the corner. There is a small sign and wooden posts to mark the entrance of the walk see photos below. You will have to step over a lot of tree roots and there are steps and a steel mesh boardwalk with handrail that leads to steel steps and onto the rocks with amazing view of the Cascade Falls. There was only another family there with kids because it was school holidays when we visited. Be careful if its rained because the steps and rocks will be slippery and look where you are going so as not to sprain your ankle when stepping over things.
No dogs are allowed on this walk as they can kill and injure native wildlife

The rainforest surrounding Cascade Falls is part of the Illawarra subtropical rainforests, one of five major concentrations of rainforest in New South Wales. These rainforests are a living reminder of the region’s once-extensive forests, which were heavily impacted by timber and dairy farming during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

The Illawarra Escarpment supports rare plant species that thrive on nutrient-rich soils derived from Illawarra coal and laterite. Some of these plants grow precariously on rock crevices and narrow ledges along the cliffs.

Cascades Rainforest Walk
- Distance: 2 km return
- Grade: Easy
- Time: 30 minutes
The walk begins at the rear of the picnic area, following a serene creek for about 1 km to the base of the 20-metre-high Cascade Falls. Along the trail, you’ll be immersed in a lush rainforest setting, with ancient Cabbage Tree palms filtering sunlight through their fronds and the dense canopy shielding you from the elements. Return via the same route to the car park.
Keep an eye out for the vibrant birdlife that calls the rainforest home. You might hear the “weet-weet” calls of the cheeky Logrunner (Orthonyx temminckii) on the forest floor or the gentle cooing of the Emerald Dove (Chalcophaps indica) with its striking emerald-green wings. The Superb Lyrebird (Menura novaehollandiae) is often seen scratching through leaf litter, particularly after rainfall, when brightly colored fungi also adorn the forest floor.
Caution: Be mindful of the Giant Stinging Tree (Dendrocnide excelsa). Its large heart-shaped leaves can cause a painful sting if touched.
Clover Hill Walk
- Distance: 5.75 km return
- Grade: Easy
- Time: 1.5 hours
Starting at a car park along Clover Hill Road, this trail winds through dense rainforest for 2.1 km, leading to a clearing with breathtaking coastal views. The site, once a dairy farm, holds remnants of the past, offering a glimpse into life here 80 years ago.
For the adventurous, continue along the trail to Macquarie Rivulet and scramble upstream to discover the enchanting Rainbow Falls. Return along the same path to complete your journey.

The Journey to Cascade Falls
Reaching Cascade Falls involves a short but rewarding bushwalk through a vibrant rainforest. The Cascade Falls Walking Track is a relatively easy trail, suitable for most fitness levels, and immerses visitors in a world of towering trees, ferns, and the soothing sounds of cascading water. The trail is well-marked and takes around 30 minutes one way, making it an ideal outing for families, couples, or solo explorers.

- Lyrebirds and wonga pigeons scratching on the forest floor.

Rainforest Giants and Their Stories
- Small-leaved figs (Ficus obliqua): These rainforest giants grow up to 40 meters tall, supported by their massive buttress roots.
- Red cedars (Toona australis): Once prized for their fine timber, these trees were extensively logged between the 1880s and 1960s. Only young specimens remain as the forest regenerates.
- Lilly pillies (Acmena smithii): These medium-sized trees are easily recognized by their flaky reddish-brown bark and glossy leaves. Their white to pale purple fruit has long been a valuable bush tucker for Aboriginal people.

Logging for red cedar and other trees drastically altered this area, allowing invasive weeds to spread. However, as the rainforest regenerates, these weeds are gradually being replaced by native vegetation.

This was a machinery shed that has been completely modernised and fully insulated and fitted with double glazed windows. Total of 90sqm inside.
Downstairs consists of a fully equipped kitchen with everything you need for a weekend or a week long stay. Pantry is well stocked including pasta and sauces to always be sure you’ll eat, no matter what time your arrival.
