Paynesville is a bigger town and popular over summer for holidays especially for boating and fishing, plus there is a ferry that goes to Raymond Island which is 100 metres to get to the island, which you can take your car onto.
We parked along the foreshore and just in front of my parked car a black swan had set up a nest right next to the road.
We also checked out Eagle Point lookout which you can drive up to with views over the river and inlet.
Discover the Lakeside Charm of Paynesville, Victoria, Australia
Tucked away in the heart of the Gippsland Lakes, Paynesville is a charming waterside village known for its tranquil atmosphere, stunning natural beauty, and abundant opportunities for outdoor adventures. Located just a short drive from Sale, Paynesville is often referred to as the “boating capital” of Victoria, and for good reason. Whether you’re into sailing, fishing, or simply relaxing by the water, this picturesque town is a must-visit destination.
We followed the road signs to Paynesville town and then drove along “The Esplanade” and “Sunset Drive” the day we visited it was windy and cold but the sun was out which was perfect for photos and videos otherwise they wouldn’t look as good if it was overcast.

This property boasts an ideal location along the river.

A Boater’s Paradise
If you love being on the water, Paynesville is your ultimate playground. With its proximity to the Gippsland Lakes, Australia’s largest inland waterway system, the town offers endless opportunities for boating and sailing. From leisurely cruises to more adventurous sailing trips, the lakes are ideal for both experienced sailors and those looking to rent a boat for a day out. The calm waters also make it perfect for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding, allowing you to explore the lakes at your own pace.

Raymond Island: A Wildlife Haven
One of Paynesville’s most unique attractions is Raymond Island, located just a short ferry ride across the water. This island is a haven for wildlife, particularly koalas. The Raymond Island Koala Trail is a self-guided walk that takes you through the island’s peaceful bushland, where you’ll have the chance to spot koalas lounging in the trees. The island is also home to echidnas, kangaroos, and a variety of bird species, making it a perfect spot for nature lovers and wildlife enthusiasts.
Fishing and Water Activities
Fishing is another popular pastime in Paynesville, with both freshwater and saltwater fishing options available. Cast your line from the shore or venture out into the lakes and rivers to catch bream, flathead, and other species. If fishing isn’t your thing, you can still enjoy the water by taking a scenic cruise or hiring a boat to explore the labyrinth of lakes, rivers, and inlets that surround the town.
Scenic Walks and Bike Rides
For those who prefer to stay on dry land, Paynesville offers plenty of opportunities to explore its scenic surroundings on foot or by bike. The town’s Foreshore Walk is a pleasant, easy trail along the waterfront, offering beautiful views of the lakes and boats moored at the marina. For a longer walk, you can head out to Eagle Point, a nearby lookout that offers panoramic views of the Gippsland Lakes and the silt jetties.
Dining and Local Flavours
Paynesville’s relaxed lakeside vibe extends to its dining scene. You’ll find a variety of cafes, restaurants, and pubs where you can enjoy a delicious meal while taking in the views of the water. Fresh, locally caught seafood is a highlight here, and there’s nothing better than sitting down to a plate of fish and chips after a day on the water. Be sure to check out the local bakeries and coffee shops, too, for some tasty treats and excellent coffee.

Paynesville Foreshore Reserve
The park is located on Sunset Drive and right on a small beach with a playground, sheltered BBQ facilities, picnic tables, free water tap to drink from or fill up your water bottle and bins for rubbish. The day we visited there was a black swan walking on the footpath, during summer I can imagine that this park would be busy with kids playing on the playground while having a picnic or BBQ with friends and family and swimming in the beach.

It’s located on “Rivermouth Rd, Eagle Point”, you can also drive right out to the point and jetty after checking out the lookout, we decided not to because it was going to add another 18 minutes each way to get there and back again and we still needed to drive to our first nights accommodation in Lakes Entrance, it just gives me another reason to go back to visit.
