Each winter, my partner and I head to Queensland for a week to escape Melbourne’s chill and visit my sister, enjoying the region’s mild temperatures. The flight from Melbourne to Brisbane is a quick two-hour trip, and we love the refreshing cool mornings and evenings in Queensland’s winter. On July 28th, 2023, we noticed it would be warm and sunny, so we set off for a drive down to Byron Bay—a first for my partner. My sister and I had briefly visited in our 20s, but this time, we took our time, making stops along the way. Coolangatta was our first stop to stretch our legs, and we spent the day whale watching. On the way back, an unexpected detour led us to Kingscliff, a place none of us had heard of before. There, my partner spotted a whale breaching in the distance, though I missed it. Next time, I’ll be prepared with binoculars and my Nikon Cool Pix camera, which I got just in time for a trip to Wilsons Prom. After Kingscliff, we drove straight back home, already looking forward to our next spontaneous adventure.
