Every winter, my partner and I head to Queensland for a week to escape Melbourne’s cold and visit my sister. The two-hour flight from Melbourne to Brisbane brings us to Queensland’s perfect winter weather, with mild temperatures and low humidity. We love the cool mornings and evenings, which feel refreshing compared to Melbourne’s chill. During our stay, we often take spontaneous day trips, deciding on destinations based on the weather the night before.
On July 28th, 2023, we took advantage of the sunny day to drive down to Byron Bay, a spot my partner had never been to. My sister and I had briefly visited in our 20s, but this time, we made a day of it. We stopped at Coolangatta for some whale watching before continuing to Byron. On the way back, we made an unplanned stop in Kingscliff after spotting a sign along the freeway. It was a pleasant surprise, and although I missed seeing the whale my partner spotted far off the coast, it sparked plans for next time. We’ll be bringing binoculars and my Nikon Cool Pix, which I bought after this trip, perfect for capturing those distant whale moments. After Kingscliff, we headed straight home, content with a day full of discoveries.
We chose to drive up to the Byron Bay Lighthouse but you can also walk up, there aren’t many spots at the top to park in and you have to pay and are only allowed to stay for an hour so that other people get a turn. There is usually a line up going up the hill so you might have to wait a while before you get a park.
