Each winter, my partner and I escape Melbourne’s cold for a week in Queensland to visit my sister. The two-hour flight from Melbourne to Brisbane lands us in Queensland’s ideal winter climate, with mild temperatures and low humidity. We relish the cool mornings and evenings, a welcome change from Melbourne’s chill. During our stay, we enjoy spontaneous day trips, choosing destinations based on the weather forecast the night before.
On July 28th, 2023, we seized a sunny day to drive to Byron Bay, a place my partner had never visited. Although my sister and I had made a brief stop there in our 20s, this trip allowed us to fully explore the area. We paused at Coolangatta for some whale watching before heading to Byron Bay. On the return journey, we made an impromptu stop in Kingscliff after spotting a sign on the freeway. It turned out to be a pleasant surprise, and while I missed the whale my partner spotted from afar, it inspired me to bring binoculars and my Nikon Cool Pix on future trips for better whale watching. After Kingscliff, we drove straight home, satisfied with a day of new experiences.
We spend a lot of time here sitting up the on the grass hill eating our lunch and watching the whales swim past. You can’t see much from a distance only where they breach and flap there tail into the water, the water was really calm so it was easier to spot the whales. The only thing I didn’t like was having to pay for parking.
