This is one of my favorite regular walks since I live nearby; I can either drive down or, for a longer stroll, walk from home. It’s a well-loved spot for families with kids and dogs, and you’ll often find fellow walkers friendly and greeting you as they pass by.

The loop around the lake from the car park is approximately 2 km and takes about 20 minutes to complete. It’s also a great location for children to practice riding bikes. You can ride along Granite Track Summit, which connects to Lysterfield Lake.

I’ve frequently seen kangaroos on the walking track to Birdsland, especially in the early morning or just before sunset. They are more likely to be spotted when the park is less crowded. I’ve also noticed them on the walking path from the entrance to the car park. For more details, check out my blog post on Birdsland Reserve: A Tranquil Natural Haven.

Among its many scenic trails, the Hill Track to Mt Morton Rd hike stands out as an unforgettable journey through lush forests, serene wetlands, and abundant wildlife. Join me in this blog post as I lace up our hiking boots and embark on a captivating exploration of Birdsland Reserve’s Hill Track to Mt Morton Rd trail.

This is the entrance to Birdsland Reserve from Mc Nicol Road. You can park in the carpark on Mc Nicol Road and walk into Birdsland Reserve along the track on the left-hand side, or drive along the gravel road until you reach the carpark. Be aware that the road is narrow in some sections, allowing only one car to pass at a time.

If you walk from the entrance of Birdsland Reserve along the track to the carpark and then up the hill, it’s about a 20-minute walk with a few stops along the way.

These photos are of the track walking in from the entrance.

The Trailhead:

My adventure begins at the trailhead, where the crisp mountain air and the chirping of native birds greet me. The Hill Track trailhead is easily accessible, and ample parking is available for visitors.

This is the start of the Hill Track to Mt Morton Road, which is on the left as you drive into the carpark and just up from the toilet block.

Scenic Beauty Unveiled:

As we venture deeper into the reserve, a breathtaking tapestry of natural beauty unfolds. The well-maintained path takes us through towering eucalyptus trees and fern-filled gullies, offering picturesque views at every turn. The lush foliage provides ample shade, creating a cool and refreshing environment.

A Scenic Summit:

The trail gradually ascends to a vantage point at Mt Morton Rd, offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. It’s a rewarding moment to catch your breath, soak in the scenery, and appreciate the beauty of the Dandenong Ranges.

For a lengthier stroll, once you reach the summit, take a left onto Mt Morton Road. Continue down the hill to the Birdsland Reserve entrance via the Mt Morton Road/Glen Road intersection.

Wetlands Wonderland:

One of the highlights of this hike is the tranquil wetlands area within Birdsland Reserve. The gravel track and grass sections along the lake allows us to observe a diverse array of waterbirds and wildlife in their natural habitat. Keep your camera ready for potential sightings of ducks, swans, and even the elusive platypus.

Wildlife Encounters:

Birdsland Reserve lives up to its name, as it’s home to numerous bird species. Keep an eye out for kookaburras, parrots, and honeyeaters. If you’re lucky, you might spot a wallaby or a kangaroo grazing in the distance.

To spot kangaroos, it’s ideal to visit in the morning before lunch or around 4pm in the afternoon on weekdays when it’s quieter. Weekends tend to be crowded with noisy cars. I’ve had luck encountering them halfway up the walking track on the right-hand side, at the top of the walk on the right-hand side in the fenced-off area at the back among the trees, and while walking in from the entrance on the left-hand side.
