This is one of my regular walks that I do as I live locally and I can either drive down or walk from my home, if I want a longer walk. Its a very popular walk for kids and dogs and people are always friendly and say hi as they walk pass.

The walk from the carpark and around the lake is about 2km and takes about 20minutes. It is also a popular place for kids to learn to ride a bike, you can also ride a bike to Granite Track Summit and then that joins up with Lysterfield Lake.

I have spotted kangaroos on the walking track to Birdsland, particularly in the early morning or an hour before sunset. They tend to be more visible when the park is quieter and less crowded. Additionally, I have seen them at the top of the Mt Morton Hill Track.

Stepping into Birdsland Reserve, Belgrave, Victoria, is like entering a natural wonderland. The crisp mountain air fills my lungs as I explore this 75-hectare sanctuary in the heart of the Dandenong Ranges. It’s a haven where native bushland, tranquil wetlands, and diverse wildlife converge, offering an unparalleled connection with the Australian wilderness. As I wander along its well-marked trails, I’m greeted by the melodious songs of resident birds and the rustling of leaves underfoot. Birdsland Reserve is not merely a place; it’s an enchanting journey into nature’s embrace, where every step reveals the serene beauty of Victoria’s rich natural heritage.

Birdsland Reserve

Nestled in the heart of the Dandenong Ranges, Birdsland Reserve in Belgrave, Victoria, is a haven of natural beauty and tranquility waiting to be explored. This pristine sanctuary, encompassing over 75 hectares of native bushland, wetlands, and walking trails, offers a rich tapestry of outdoor experiences for nature enthusiasts, hikers, birdwatchers, and anyone seeking solace in the embrace of Mother Nature. Join me as we embark on a virtual journey through the wonders of Birdsland Reserve, uncovering its scenic trails, diverse wildlife, and the magic of the Australian wilderness.

It’s a fantastic spot to gather with family and friends for a BBQ under shelter. The area also features toilets, drinking water, and picnic tables.

A Wilderness Oasis:

As you step into Birdsland Reserve, the hustle and bustle of urban life fade away, replaced by the rustling leaves and melodious songs of native birds. The reserve’s vast expanse is home to a wide array of ecosystems, from lush eucalyptus forests to serene wetlands, making it a biodiversity hotspot.

During summer, on extremely hot and windy days when there is a total fire ban, the park gates are closed, and no one is allowed entry. Victoria has a fire rating system that indicates the increased likelihood of bushfires on such days. I use the Vic Emergency App on my phone, which alerts me to fires, accidents, and fallen trees. During this season, it’s essential to be prepared to evacuate at short notice depending on the weather conditions.

These are pictures of the track if you park in the car park outside of the gates on Mc Nicol Road.

Trails of Discovery:

Birdsland Reserve boasts an extensive network of well-marked walking trails, each offering a unique perspective of the natural beauty that thrives here. Whether you’re an avid hiker or just looking for a leisurely stroll, there’s a trail suited to your pace. The Hill Track to Mt Morton Rd trail, in particular, stands out for its panoramic vistas and serene wetlands. Keep your binoculars handy as you explore the reserve, and you might spot kingfishers, rosellas, and even the occasional wedge-tailed eagle soaring overhead. Additionally, the wetlands are home to a diverse range of waterbirds, creating a captivating symphony of nature’s wonders.

A Picnic Paradise:

Throughout the reserve, you’ll discover tranquil picnic areas set amidst the natural beauty. Pack a picnic hamper and enjoy a meal surrounded by the sights and sounds of the Australian wilderness. It’s a perfect setting for families and friends to gather and create lasting memories.

Plentiful Wildlife:

Birdsland Reserve is not just about birds; it’s also home to kangaroos, wallabies, and other native wildlife. Keep a watchful eye during your visit, and you may encounter these iconic Australian creatures in their natural habitat.

Stunning Vistas:

Hiking to higher points within the reserve rewards you with stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscape. It’s a reminder of the vast beauty of the Dandenong Ranges and the sense of tranquility that nature imparts.
