After reading this review hopefully you will have a better idea about the features and capabilities of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro. I will go through the changes from iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Pro to see if it’s worth upgrading and also compare it against the top Android phones. This is not an in-depth look at all the features and everything the iPhone 14 offers but more a summary of the main features and what has changed since iPhone 13, plus a look at which phone is best.
iPhone 14 main features:
- 6.1″ OLED Display

- Dynamic Island
The iPhone 14 Plus just has a bigger size like the iPhone 14 Pro Max so the features are all the same, it’s size is 6.8″ for both. As you can see from the points above the main differences between the iPhone 14 and Pro models is the camera and Apple’s new Dynamic Island, which is just a fancy word for status bar that shows what you are doing while doing other things (ie playing music, talking on the phone etc). The Pro having an extra lens for optical zooming without sacrificing image quality and also the main lens being 48MP now instead of 12MP.
If you want to look at the features of both a little closer then check out Apples site for iPhone 14 specs and the iPhone 14 Pro specs.
Breakdown of iPhone 14
The screen size for the iPhone 14 is 6.1″ which is about average for most smart phones these days and still not too big so you can use it with one hand. This screen size supports 2532×1170 pixel resolution at 460 ppi with 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio and 800 nits max brightness, so basically it’s bright and looks awesome. The main lens is 12MP and takes awesome photo’s with Apple’s filtering and image stabilasation you won’t ever be disappointed.
The iPhone 14 Pro is basically the same phone but with a few extra features, mostly just a better camera and a zoom lens. If you are right into taking photo’s then this model is definitely for you, with the extra megapixels (48MP) now on the main lens, the resolution will be amazing and easier to crop without sacrificing too much pixels. The optical zoom can be quite handy as well, I use that feature quite a lot on my iPhone 13 Pro with taking pictures of flowers, animals, or people to get better closeups.
The Apple phones are quite expensive and this one is no exception.
The iPhone 14 128GB will cost you $829 USD or €999 for EU
The iPhone 14 Pro 128GB will cost you $999 USD or €1,299 for EU
To upgrade or not to upgrade….
If you are currently using an iPhone 13 or Pro, like I am, then it would be better to wait until next years release as the changes are very minimal and not worth the cost. Usually it’s better to wait for two versions above the Apple device you have to get a real upgrade with significant better features.
If you are looking to upgrade from something lower than an iPhone 12 then it might be better to look at the iPhone 13 as the changes from this model are not significant and getting your hands on a refurbished phone could really save you some money. If you are upgrading and love to take quality pictures then definitely go for the iPhone 14 Pro if you can afford it.
Android vs Apple
Most people are either into Android phones or completely into Apple phones, it’s atually really hard to switch between them because of the cloud syncing and features that each manufacturer has to keep you locked into their model phone. Samsung even has their own App store and you have to create a Samsung account, much like the Google Play Store and Gmail account you need.
To use an Apple device you need an AppleID and you get some cloud space which will store passwords and photos. Android has similar features from each manufacturer, photo syncing into cloud space and storage of passwords, accounts etc.
Which one is better? Depends on your personal preference, budget, and features that you like on the phone. These days the phones are so similar because they copy each other constantly, which really makes it easier to be on one side or the other as new features will eventually show up on both.
Budget is probably the biggest difference between the phones as most Apple phones are at the high end of the price scale, especially for the top models with the moset space. The top Android phones are high in price but a lot lower than their Apple counterparts with usually more features and space.
The best part about Android phones is the variety and price, where you can grab a descent phone for $200 USD or €250. The worst part about Android is the disconnection between the manufacturers and the Android OS from Google. What this means is that each manufacturer building a phone doesn’t control the main parts of the software running the phone and can only customise to suit their brand. This creates a lot of issues with things like Bluetooth, WiFi, power control, camera and touch screen.
The last major issue with Android is Apps and how many harmful ones are out there trying to steal your data or hack your phone. For people that know what they are doing and which Apps are safe this is generally not an issue, but for other people that are not tech savvy they can really be caught out.
The biggest issue with Apple is the connector and being locked into Apple products as nothing seems to work nicely with other brands. Also if you don’t have an Apple MAC book or iMAC it can be quite frustrating to move things on/off your phone or access photo syncing. Android have gone mostly to the USB-C connector whereas Apple sticks with the proprietary lightning connector. Once this changes though, all the current cables and accessories will be obsolete and painful to connect to the new connector.
Can you switch between Apple and Android….
Of course you can but I would not recommend it. This requires a certain skill level with technology that most people do not have, this includes syncing of contacts, photos and messages. Plus you lose all you created chats in iMessage or messages on Android unless you use Messenger or WhatsApp. If you use Apple Notes or any other proprietary Apps then you would also lose this data or not be able to take it with you.
iPhone 14 vs Samsung Galaxy S22
Currently the best phone for Samsung is the Galaxy S22 phone which has the following features:
- 6.1″ Dynamic AMOLED 2X
- 2340×1080 pixel resolution with 425 ppi
- 1300 nits peak brightness
- 50MP Wide Angle: 23 mm, ƒ/1.8 aperture
- 10MP 3x Telephoto: 70 mm, ƒ/2.4 aperture
- 12MP Ultra Wide: 13 mm, ƒ/2.2 aperture
- 3x optical zoom out; digital zoom up to 30x
- 8-core CPU
- 128GB, 256GB storage space
The Samsung also has a couple of better versions like the S22+ and S22 Ultra which just have a bigger screen and higher megapixel camera. As you can see from the specs above they are really similar to the iPhone 14, but has a slightly better Telephoto lens at 70mm which is amazing. The price is pretty similar to the iPhone 14 but it has been out since Febuary 2022.
If you are looking for your first phone then the choice comes down to which brand do you want to get locked into and stick with forever, and also which do you prefer Apple or Android.
iPhone 14 vs Google Pixel 6 Pro
Another popular Android phone is the Google Pixel 6 Pro phone which has the following features:
- 6.7″ LTPO AMOLED
- 3120×1440 pixel resolution with 512 ppi
- 50MP Wide Angle: 25 mm, ƒ/1.9 aperture
- 48MP 4x Telephoto: 104 mm, ƒ/3.5 aperture
- 12MP Ultra Wide: 17 mm, ƒ/2.2 aperture
- 3x optical zoom out; digital zoom up to 30x
- 8-core CPU
- 128GB, 256GB and 512GB storage space
The Google Pixel 6 Pro is targeted towards people that love taking photos, with close to the best cameras available on a smart phone and some clever image processing with Magic Eraser (erase people out of your photos). Google used to provide unlimited storage for photos but that ended a while ago and now it’s more inline with most of the other big players.
Again the phone is so similar to the Samsung and Apple but has a better price for a bigger screen and better cameras.
Conclusion….
Here are the main points to take away from this post:
- iPhone 14, impressive screen, good cameras, but expensive
- iPhone 14 Pro, impressive screen, better cameras and even more expensive
- Don’t upgrade from iPhone 13 to iPhone 14, wait for iPhone 15
- Upgrade to iPhone 13 from any other Apple to save money especially refurbished
- Samsung S22 and Google Pixel Pro 6 have better cameras and cost less, but choose to stick with Android or Apple as changing is a pain
Hopefully now you have a better idea of which way to go on your next phone purchase and whether the iPhone 14 is right for you!
