For the 4 days that we were in the Blue Mountains we were doing 2 walks a day, one in the morning and the other after lunch. We wanted to fit in as many walks as we could. The South Lawson Waterfall Loop Track was our second last walk for the trip.
On the 26th of November 2023 we did the Minnehaha Falls walk in the morning at 9:24am and were heading back to the car at 10:15am, then went back to our accommodation for lunch and then arrived at Wentworth Falls Lake Park at 1:02pm to take a couple of photos and videos because there is paid parking at the lake so we didn’t stay long.
We arrived at Lawson to do the walk at 1:21pm and parked at the second car park, they are both on Honour avenue with their own car parks and are well signed.
I don’t recommend walking solo in Australia because its not safe especially if you a woman as this walk isn’t as popular as other walks in the Blue Mountains mainly locals who live around the area walk here.
The primary starting point for the circuit walk is located less than 1 km south of the train station (refer to the map for exact location). If the parking lot is full, you can park along the roadside or use the second parking area further south.
Since the train station is within walking distance of the trailhead, public transport offers a great alternative to driving.
For those visiting with dogs, the circuit walk passes by the former Lawson golf course, which has been transformed into a large dog park. For more information, visit the local council’s website.
Discovering the South Lawson Park Waterfall Loop in the Blue Mountains
If you’re looking for a peaceful and scenic bushwalk in the Blue Mountains, the South Lawson Park Waterfall Loop is an excellent choice. Nestled within the charming suburb of Lawson, this 3km circuit takes you on a journey through a lush landscape, offering the chance to experience four stunning waterfalls: Adelina Falls, Federal Falls, Cataract Falls, and Junction Falls.
Where to Start the Circuit
You can begin the circuit from either of the two car parks located on Honour Avenue. We opted for the North Honour Avenue car park. While parking spaces at both car parks are limited, there’s ample free street parking available nearby with no time restrictions.
Distance: 2.5km (around 4km if you explore all the side paths)
Trail Type: Circuit
Terrain: Primarily a dirt track, well-marked and generally well-maintained
Elevation Gain: 160 meters
Difficulty: Easy to Moderate, with a few steep parts but mostly flat terrain
Duration: Typically takes about 1.5 hours
Track Notes
Despite being over a century old, the South Lawson Waterfall Circuit Walk remains relatively quiet, as it’s not a widely known tourist spot.
The ideal time to explore this walk is after rainfall, when the waterfalls are at their most stunning. However, keep in mind that the track can become quite muddy, so it’s best to wear sturdy hiking shoes.
The entrance to track
The circuit walk begins at the intersection of Honour Ave and Livingstone Street, where you’ll find a sign marking the start.
This part of the track is steep so make sure you hold onto the handrail as you are going down the steps and if it has rained the steps will be slippery.
Its better to walk slower going down the steps so not to roll or twist your ankle
It was a few degrees cooler when walking along this track as most of it is in shade, so I would take a light jumper just in case like I did. It was cool walking through these big boulder rocks as I felt small standing next to them. Don’t forget to get a photo next to one.
Don’t try and cross the creek with the stones going across the creek after heavy rain as they will be covered in water and will be slippery.
Don’t go this way
If you see these photos while walking you need to turn around because you are going the wrong way, we tried this way but there is no path and its all overgrown.
You need to follow the path back until you reach the top photo on the left with the stones crossing the creek, now you are on the right path.
Once you step off the steps in the bottom right hand corner, there will be a sign that says Federal Falls one way and Junction/Adelina Falls the other way.
This part of the walk is now heading up the hill and back to the first car park so it is steep so hold onto the handrail.
This is the last section of the track before reaching the car park. The last 6 photos in the gallery are of the fire track back to the second car park.
A Walk Through Nature’s Beauty
The South Lawson Park Waterfall Loop is a relatively easy hike, making it perfect for families, beginners, or anyone who wants to immerse themselves in nature without tackling a strenuous trail. The walk is well-maintained, with a mix of natural bush tracks and boardwalks, ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable experience for all ages. As you make your way along the loop, you’ll be surrounded by dense eucalypt forest, ferns, and a variety of native plants, creating a serene and tranquil environment.
Waterfalls That Captivate
Each of the four waterfalls on this trail has its own unique charm. Adelina Falls, the first you’ll encounter, is a delicate cascade that gently tumbles over a rock face, creating a peaceful atmosphere. Further along, Federal Falls and Cataract Falls offer more impressive drops, particularly after a good rainfall. Junction Falls, the final waterfall on the loop, is a beautiful amphitheater of cascading water that never fails to impress.
The sound of the flowing water, the cool, misty air, and the vibrant greenery all contribute to a sense of tranquillity and rejuvenation. These waterfalls are the perfect spots to pause, take in the natural beauty, and perhaps enjoy a picnic.
Cataract Falls
Cataract Falls, located in South Lawson within the Blue Mountains, New South Wales, is a hidden gem for those seeking a peaceful and scenic waterfall experience. Accessible via the South Lawson Waterfall Circuit, the trail to Cataract Falls offers a moderate walk through dense bushland, with the sound of cascading water leading the way. Surrounded by lush vegetation and towering eucalyptus trees, the falls are a tranquil spot to relax and enjoy nature. The track also passes other waterfalls, making it a rewarding hike for nature lovers and photographers alike. With its serene atmosphere and scenic beauty, Cataract Falls provides a refreshing escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
Cataract Creek Cascades
During summer this place must get busy with all the locals cooling off in the cascades. While we were walking in November 2023 there were a couple of young girls sitting in the water, it wasn’t really warm enough to swim.
These cascades don’t come up on google maps but are well worth checking out.
Federal Falls
Federal Falls, nestled in South Lawson within the Blue Mountains, is one of the key highlights along the South Lawson Waterfall Circuit. Surrounded by rich, verdant bushland, this picturesque waterfall offers a peaceful retreat for hikers and nature lovers. The walking trail to Federal Falls winds through native vegetation and tranquil creek crossings, providing opportunities to spot local wildlife and enjoy the serenity of the forest. While the falls may be modest in size, their charm lies in the quiet beauty of the setting, offering an ideal spot to relax and take in the natural surroundings.
Junction Falls
Junction Falls, located along the South Lawson Waterfall Circuit in the Blue Mountains, is a serene and scenic waterfall surrounded by lush native bushland. The falls are accessible via a well-maintained walking trail that leads through dense forest, offering a tranquil escape for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Cascading gently over rock formations, Junction Falls is framed by ferns and towering trees, creating a peaceful atmosphere perfect for quiet reflection or a break during the hike. The natural beauty of the area, combined with the soothing sounds of the water, makes Junction Falls a must-visit spot on the South Lawson circuit.
Adelina Falls
Adelina Falls is one of the most picturesque waterfalls along the South Lawson Waterfall Circuit in the Blue Mountains. Nestled amidst dense ferns and towering eucalyptus trees, this tranquil waterfall cascades over a rocky ledge into a serene pool below, creating a peaceful atmosphere for visitors. The falls are easily accessible via a short and scenic walking trail, making it a popular stop for hikers and nature lovers exploring the area. Surrounded by lush greenery and the sounds of cascading water, Adelina Falls offers a perfect spot for relaxation and nature photography. It’s a hidden gem that embodies the natural beauty of the Blue Mountains.
Wildlife and Flora
The South Lawson Park Waterfall Loop is not just about the waterfalls. The area is home to a variety of bird species, making it a great spot for birdwatching. Keep an eye out for lyrebirds, crimson rosellas, and other native birds that add to the natural soundtrack of your walk. The flora along the trail is equally impressive, with towering eucalypts, delicate ferns, and colorful wildflowers adding to the visual appeal of the walk.
Practical Information
Starting the loop is easy, with the trailhead located at the corner of Honour Avenue and Livingstone Street in Lawson. There’s ample parking available, and the walk itself is well signposted, so you won’t have any trouble finding your way. The trail can be completed in about 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on how often you stop to take in the sights. While the loop is generally easy, there are some sections with stairs and uneven ground, so wearing sturdy walking shoes is recommended.
A Hidden Gem in the Blue Mountains
The South Lawson Park Waterfall Loop may not be as famous as some of the other Blue Mountains trails, but it’s a hidden gem that offers a rewarding and peaceful experience. Whether you’re a local looking for a new spot to explore or a visitor wanting to experience the beauty of the Blue Mountains, this trail is definitely worth a visit. It’s a perfect way to spend a morning or afternoon, surrounded by nature and the calming presence of cascading waterfalls.
