Last November, my partner and I embarked on a two-week road trip from Melbourne to the Blue Mountains in New South Wales. We had long dreamed of visiting the Blue Mountains, but various obstacles—including financial issues, bushfires, and floods—had previously delayed our plans.

Looking back, I’m thankful we waited, as the timing ended up being ideal for our exploration of the east coast of Australia. Now, I’m excited to document our journey through photos and stories for my travel blog.

Kiama was among one of the coastal stops we visited en route to our next overnight stay. We stopped at a lot of places between each accomodation.

Kiama has always been a special place for me. Nestled on the stunning South Coast of New South Wales, it’s where dramatic cliffs meet the ocean and the iconic Kiama Blowhole puts on a show. With its charming town center, beautiful beaches, and lush hinterland, Kiama offers a perfect blend of relaxation and adventure. From the scenic coastal walks to the vibrant local markets, there’s something for everyone. Discovering Kiama: A Coastal Gem on the South Coast

Nestled on the stunning South Coast of New South Wales, Kiama is a coastal town that perfectly combines natural beauty, charming town life, and thrilling outdoor adventures. Whether you’re a nature lover, a foodie, or simply looking to unwind by the sea, Kiama has something to offer.

Iconic Sights and Natural Wonders

One of the most famous attractions in Kiama is the Kiama Blowhole. This natural wonder is known for its impressive displays, where seawater shoots up through a hole in the rocks, creating a spectacular spray. The nearby Little Blowhole also offers a more intimate experience and is well worth a visit.

For those who love to explore on foot, the Kiama Coastal Walk is a must-do. Stretching over 22 kilometers, this walk offers panoramic ocean views, dramatic cliffs, and the opportunity to spot local wildlife. The walk takes you past several beaches, through lush greenery, and along historic sites.

Another great option is the Minnamurra Rainforest, located in the nearby Budderoo National Park. Here, you can immerse yourself in lush rainforest, marvel at the diverse plant and animal life, and enjoy the peaceful ambiance of the walking trails.

Charming Town and Local Attractions

Kiama’s town center is filled with charm and character. Stroll along the main street to discover a range of boutique shops, cafes, and eateries. The Kiama Farmers Market, held every Wednesday, offers fresh produce and local goods, giving you a taste of the region’s best.

Don’t miss the historic Kiama Lighthouse, which provides a fantastic vantage point for views over the coastline. The lighthouse is also a great spot for a picnic, with plenty of scenic spots nearby to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Adventure and Activities

For those seeking adventure, Kiama offers plenty of options. Explore the nearby Jamberoo Action Park for a fun day out with water slides and thrill rides, or embark on a kayaking adventure to discover the area’s waterways and marine life.

Fishing enthusiasts will appreciate the opportunities for both deep-sea and shore fishing, with plenty of spots to try your luck and enjoy the tranquil surroundings.

Little Blowhole

The Little Blowhole in Kiama is a captivating natural feature that offers a more intimate alternative to its larger counterpart, the Kiama Blowhole. Located on the southern side of the Kiama coastline, this smaller blowhole is renowned for its impressive displays of seawater shooting up through a rock fissure, creating a dramatic spray. The Little Blowhole is particularly fascinating during high tide and strong swells, making it a prime spot for watching nature’s power in action. Surrounded by rugged coastal scenery and accessible via a short walk, it provides a stunning and less crowded experience for visitors seeking a touch of natural wonder.

After stopping at Kingsford Smith Memorial Reserve in Gerroa our next stop was Kiama to see the two blowholes which was only a 16 minute (15km) drive up the coast. This one is harder to find but worth it when you get there. Its cool watching the water shoot up into the air and definitely worth visiting.

Kiama Blowhole Point reserve

Kiama Blowhole Point Reserve is a picturesque coastal spot renowned for its impressive blowhole and breathtaking views. We visited the blowhole on Tuesday 21st November 2023 at 2:43pm and Kiama was the last stop for the day before we arrived at our accomodation in Wollongong. We stayed at the Best Western City Sands Golf Club. I recommend visiting the blowhole during the week when it isn’t as busy as the weekend,

This is a hiden gem that not many people know about, we were the only ones that were there, the sun was perfectly positioned to light up the area for photos and videos.

Minnamurra Whale Watching Platform

The Minnamurra Whale Watching Platform offers an exceptional vantage point for observing the majestic humpback whales that frequent the waters off the New South Wales coast. Situated near the Minnamurra River, this purpose-built platform provides panoramic views of the ocean and is strategically positioned to maximize whale sightings during the annual migration season, typically from June to November. Equipped with informative signage and ample space for visitors, it’s a prime spot for both casual observers and dedicated whale watchers. The surrounding natural beauty, with lush greenery and coastal landscapes, further enhances the experience, making it a must-visit for nature lovers.

This was the last place we stopped in at Kiama before driving to our accomodation for the night. We were the only ones there, I would imagine its gets busy during whale watching season and its a perfect spot to see whales.
