Places To Visit Around The Area

1000 Steps

The 1000 Steps / Kokoda Memorial track, constructed in the early 1900s, commemorates the famed battle of the Thousand Steps in Papua New Guinea during World War 2. While not precisely 1000 steps, this steep and narrow path serves as a poignant memorial. It’s a popular yet respectful hike in the Dandenong Ranges, offering stunning views and a fitness challenge. Alongside, the Fire Trail / Glasgow Track provides an alternative ascent to Mt Dandenong’s summit, sans steps but with rocky terrain and scenic vistas.

Tim Neville Arboretum

Located on Dorset Road, Ferntree Gully, the Tim Neville Arboretum spans 11 acres, serving as a versatile recreational reserve.

Gardens Overview: The arboretum features both sunlit and shaded grassy expanses, ideal for picturesque picnics. Visitors can admire a serene lake and wetlands inhabited by ducks and their ducklings during spring. A boardwalk offers panoramic views, while various walking trails wind through flower beds and charmingly landscaped gardens.

Additional Amenities: Equipped with picnic tables, shelters, and BBQ facilities, the arboretum also boasts a sizable gazebo and amphitheater, a sculpted wall, ample seating, and accessible pathways. Fountains, Knox’s war memorial, stormwater treatment, and habitat wetlands add to its allure, along with public toilets and a spacious playground. Notably, a War Memorial resides in the tranquil corner of the gardens.

Wally Tew Reserve Playground

Located at 1010 Burwood Highway, Ferntree Gully

This captivating play area, themed “Forest Floor,” brings bugs to life in an engaging and entertaining way. Dominating the playground are two remarkable bug sculptures: one featuring a wooden shell and metallic lattice top, accessible via external ladder or internal platforms. The other metal insect offers climbing frames and a curved wing slide.

A sandpit, equipped with a deluxe metal digger and curvy sand table, occupies the central space, bordered by rocks and logs. A spinning cone adds excitement, while a lengthy ramp boasts various amusements like wobbly walkways, climbing walls, and cubbies. Additionally, it hosts insect-shaped roofs and swings, including a birds nest swing and flying fox.

A shelter within the fenced area provides seating and a water tap, while outside, a BBQ shelter and artistic toilet block offer further amenities. Adjacent features include a rotunda, grassy area, and nearby oval for added enjoyment.
