Funny Tale
My partner has visited Wilsons Promontory more frequently than I have. During his twenties, he camped at Tidal River in a tent. One night, he turned in early, only to be abruptly awakened by a heavy weight on his legs. Assuming it was a late-returning friend who’d had a few drinks, he was shocked to discover it was actually a wombat! The creature had ripped through the tent in search of a loaf of bread and ended up sprawled across his legs. If you’re camping, remember to store your food in an esky or the car—wombats have an extraordinary sense of smell!
Squeaky Beach
Nestled within the breathtaking Wilsons Promontory National Park, Squeaky Beach is a hidden gem that offers visitors a unique and memorable experience. Renowned for its striking white quartz sand that emits a distinct “squeak” underfoot, this beach is a must-visit destination for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and families alike.
A Unique Beach Experience
As you step onto the soft, fine sand of Squeaky Beach, you’ll immediately notice its distinctive texture. The sand particles are rounded and smooth, causing them to squeak as you walk. This fun and unusual phenomenon is a hit with kids and adults alike, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to your beach visit.
Stunning Scenery
Squeaky Beach is more than just its famous sand. The beach is framed by striking granite boulders, which provide an excellent backdrop for photography and a perfect playground for those who love to explore. These giant rocks create natural pathways and little hideaways, making it a great spot for an adventure.
The clear, turquoise waters of Bass Strait gently lap at the shore, inviting visitors to take a refreshing dip. On a calm day, the water is perfect for swimming and snorkeling, allowing you to explore the vibrant marine life that inhabits the area.

Squeaky Beach is an ideal destination for families. The gentle waves make it a safe spot for kids to splash around, and the wide, open expanse of sand is perfect for building sandcastles, playing beach games, or simply relaxing under the sun. The surrounding rock formations also provide endless opportunities for little adventurers to climb and explore.
A Photographer’s Paradise
With its pristine white sand, azure waters, and dramatic granite formations, Squeaky Beach offers countless opportunities for stunning photographs. Whether you’re an amateur photographer or a seasoned pro, you’ll find no shortage of beautiful scenes to capture. Sunrise and sunset are particularly magical times to visit, as the changing light paints the landscape in a spectrum of beautiful hues.

Warning
- At Squeaky Beach, be aware that large, unexpected waves and strong currents can occur, and there are no lifeguard services available. The weather can also change rapidly.
- If you plan to fish from the rocks, exercise caution. Submerged rocks and slippery surfaces when wet can pose risks. Always wear a personal flotation device (PFD) and avoid fishing alone, as conditions can shift quickly.
- Stay clear of cliffs—don’t walk, sunbathe, or play beneath them, as they may collapse suddenly without warning.
On hot summer days, with temperatures ranging from 30 to 40 degrees Celsius, the sand can become extremely hot. Having walked on hot sand in flip-flops myself, I recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes to avoid discomfort.
